Ben McAdam: I Help Clients All over the World Improve Their Profits

Ben McAdam is a virtual CFO and business consultant who started his online work five years ago. He really wanted to spend as much time as possible with his newborn daughter. Today, he helps clients all over the world improve their profits, especially utilising the benefits of working and hiring online. This is his story.

The Start

I studied accounting at university and began a traineeship at a local tax practice. I moved between accounting roles trying to find where I fit, then when my daughter was almost born I started my own tax practice so I would be able to spend more time with her. I was only planning to have one child, so those early years were precious.

Shortly after I co-founded and grew an online bookkeeping business, sold that to my co-founder and separately sold my tax practice.

The Sacrifices

My intention was to have more time to spend, but sometimes I had to work long hours. Luckily I could usually be flexible about those hours, working when my daughter had naps or when she eventually got to sleep at night.

I could have earned much more money if I stayed in a job while my business was building, so there wasn’t a lot of money when my daughter was very young, but babies are very cheap to entertain (and sleepy parents are too!).

The Opportunities

Somebody once said that working for yourself is an intense self-development program. They were right! Asking clients/customers for money is a practical way to work on issues of self-worth and value. Being your own boss provides an opportunity to work on initiative, drive and professionalism. I’ve expanded my comfort zone and launched a podcast, reached out to the media, shared more on social media, ran a mini conference and, most surprising of all, I’ve enjoyed public speaking.

The future

There are options to shape my business in many interesting ways, e.g. I may expand on my coaching to have junior coaches working for me, or acquire equity in businesses that I can advise, or start another business on the side.

My main goal was always to have flexible hours and flexible location with my work, to spend more time with my family, so that will always be a big part of my future.
