Ashley Baxter graduated with a Bachelor’s in Communications & Public Relations and was horrified when her first internship in the industry consisted of her tracking media mentions for the company she was working for on an Excel spreadsheet.

„That wasn’t how I wanted to spend my life so I taught myself the basics of Google AdWords and pitched myself as a digital media and PR professional. Over the years I followed digital trends and continued reaching myself all things that were cutting edge and online. Through my career I got jobs in SEO, content marketing, social media, paid media and more because of my willingness to say yes and move with speed to actually learn what I needed to.“
Ashley says that she has found a successful career in digital because she was willing to take risks and create her own path instead of following what others said she should do.
I Wasn’t Experienced…
I started my career by focusing on roles that would give me hands on experience that I didn’t already have. Instead of staying on one linear track in digital marketing, I sought opportunities that would add a variety of new skills to my background. Networking was also a vital part of my career. Early on I joined industry interest groups, networking happy hours, and any other events that allowed me meet people who were already where I wanted to be.
Being a Martyr Seldom Ends in Happiness (And a Good Amount of Balance)
A wise friend once told me that being a martyr seldom ends in happiness. So, while I’ve definitely made some sacrifices due to my career I’ve also found a good amount of balance. Mindfulness in decision making has helped me with that. For example, I postponed celebrating my mom’s 50th birthday because I was leading social strategy for the nationwide re-branding of a major wireless carrier. Later that year, I postponed moving across the country (for the same company) so I could take her to Hawaii for a belated celebration. It’s all about balance.
We Are More Than What We Do for a Living…
My career has brought me multiple opportunities for personal growth. From networking to speaking on stages, I’ve expanded the boundaries of my comfort zone thanks to my career. However, I’ve also learned the importance of seeking personal growth from other outlets. We are more than what we do for a living. The experiences I’ve found in that journey have been invaluable and have helped me growth into the woman I am today.
Pillars of Positivity
The future of my career will bring the opportunity to expand my positive impact on the planet through the entrepreneurs I support with Modern Marketing School. In my corporate career, I managed multi-million dollar budgets and many agencies. Small business owners and solopreneurs often don’t have those resources. Yet, they are often pillars of positivity in their community which means their success is vital. I’m excited that the future of my career will allow me to support them on their journey, while increasing my own impact as well.
