He’s Expecting You

„I can’t.“ I said half- scared when Veronique tried to enter the car she and Michael arrived in.

„What?“ She asked. „Are you completely mad?“

„He’ll kill many people if I don’t listen to him.“ I answered.

Then, Jonas helped a little.

He showed his watch.

„I tried to hack his system.“ He said. „But the bastard thought of everything. I could only call you.“

Then, my phone rang. I picked up and heard his voice.

„You and your mysterious friends have exactly twenty minutes to start driving that van or people will be hurt. And everything goes on your conscience“ Jeff, determined, but a little bit angry and annoyed said.

„Where?“ I asked.

„Don’t worry.“ He replied. „I’ll show you the way. You only have to sit there and drive. And bring your mysterious friends.“

„No!“ I said sharply. „I’ll come, but leave them.“

„On one condition.“ He replied. „They have to stop in front of the van and look into the small camera near the driver seat. One by one.“

„All right.“ I said.

Jonas gave his watch first to Veronique and then to Mihael. They did what he asked.

„Two agents. Why didn’t I hear  of them before?“

„They’re new.“ I answered.

„Yes.“ He replied. „New and ready to die for their ideals.“

„Are you going to let them go?“ I asked. I didn’t like his mocking at all.

„All right.“ Jeff answered. He seemed to be in a hurry. „They are irrelevant. You, Vanessa and your driver- enter the van and go!“

We did that.

„Don’t worry!“ Veronique said. „They don’t know  us.“

„Hurry!“ I said. „You don’t have much time!“

She nodded and we entered the van. Jonas drove. I couldn’t concentrate on driving because I was too anxious.

The car stopped by an old building. It was somewhere in Central Europe. The exact location was classified, so even I  didn’t exactly know how to get there. An autonomous driver in all our vehicles did the whole job.

I recognized the tall, thin and pale guy who was there, pretending to be a bum while watching for potential threats. We called him Mr. Poplar because he was always there, no matter if it was hot, cold, windy or rainy. He was always there.

„He’s expecting you. To explain!“

I didn’t like the tone of his voice.  It was full of disappointment.
